N
NAEA (National Association of Estate Agents) - This is an association which looks after estate agents and ensures they sign up to the Estate Agents Code of Practice and schemes such as the Ombudsman Scheme.
Nail Annual Ring - A nail that has grooves around the shank which prevent easy withdrawal; also called a ring shank nail.
Nail Barbed - A nail with a barbed shank to resist withdrawal.
Nail Holding Hammer - A magnet set into the head grips an iron or steel nail. One sharp strike starts the nail.
Nail Inspection - An inspection made by a municipal building inspector after the drywall material is hung with nails and screws (and before taping).
Nail Puller - Has a V-notch, which slips under the nail head and a long handle to provide extra leverage to pull up a nail.
Nail Sets - For use when a nail head is to be sunk below the work surface. Tips can vary: point, flat or a cup, which permits firm location on the nailhead. Cushioned grip versions can protect your hands, allowing you to concentrate on the work and not your knuckles.
Nailer - A piece of lumber secured to non-nailable decks and walls by bolts or other means, which provides a suitable backing onto which roof components may be mechanically fastened.
Nailer Pneumatic - Framing: Perfect for frame construction. The most powerful of the air-powered fasteners, it can drive nails up to 3-1/2-inches long. Pin: Used for attaching trim, carpet strips and moldings. Finish: Useful for installing siding, flooring, door and window casing and most types of finish carpentry.
Nailing Back - The practice of nailing roofing felts to the deck under the overlap, in addition to hot mopping, to prevent slippage of felts.
Nailing Blind - - Attaching boards to framing or sheathing with nails driven through the edge of each piece so as to be concealed by the succeeding board.
- In installing tongue-and-groove flooring, the nails are placed at the root of the tongue where they will be hidden by the groove of the next piece; the nails pierce the subfloor at a 45 degree angle.
- The practice of nailing the back portion of a roofing ply so that the nails will be concealed by the next ply of roofing.
Nailing Direct - To nail perpendicular to the initial surface or to the junction of the pieces joined. Also termed face nailing.

Nails Drywall - Nails used for hanging regular drywall that is to be taped and finished later must have adequate holding power and a head design that does not cut the face paper. They must also be of the proper depth to provide exactly 1 inch penetration into the framing member. Nails commonly used are chemically-etched and are designed with a cupped head.
Naphtha Painters - ,Li>A highly flammable petroleum product used by painters as thinning solvent and diluent- Also used in dyeing and as a cleansing agent.

Narrow Belt Sander - A good sander for narrow spaces and tight spots. Easy to maneuver, but doesn't do well on wide surfaces.

National House Building Association - A governing body for new homes issue a 10 year structural guarantee. Their inspectors will ensure that your new home is built properly and is safe.
Natural Asphalt - - Asphalt occurring in nature which has been derived from petroleum by natural processes of evaporation of volatile fractions leaving the asphalt fractions.
- The native asphalt of most importance are found in the Trinidad and Bermudez Lake deposits.
- Asphalt from these sources is called Lake Asphalt.
Natural Convection - The natural movement of heat that occurs when a warm fluid rises and a cool fluid sinks under the influence of gravity.
Natural Finish - A transparent finish which does not seriously alter the original colour or grain of the natural wood. Natural finishes are usually provided by sealers, oils, varnishes, water repellent preservatives, and other similar materials.

Neat Plaster - - Plaster having portland cement as its binder, used on exterior surfaces or in damp areas.
- Gypsum plaster made to be used with the addition of sand for basecoat plaster.
- Also called Neat or Hardwall plaster.
- A base coat plaster which does not contain aggregates and is used where the addition of aggregates on the job is desired.
Needle Rasps - Tiny rasps ideal for model-making or detailed carving and fitting. Come in varied shapes: rectangular, tapered, triangular, round, half-round and square. For metalwork, needle files are available.
Negative Equity - When the value of your house falls to a level less than your mortgage.
Negotiating Or Bidding Phase - One of the standard phases of architectural service (Schematic Design Phase, Design Development Phase, Construction Documents Phase, Bidding or Negotiation Phase, and Construction Phase-Administration of the Construction Contract).
Negotiation - The process of offer and counter offer often utilised to agree a price on a property.
Neoprene - A synthetic rubber having physical properties closely resembling those of natural rubber. It is made by polymerizing chloroprenes, and the latter is produced from acetylene and hydrogen chloride.
Nest Of Saws - Great for homeowners, this tool is actually four saws in one. The tool comes with three interchangeable blades to handle cutting jobs around the home and yard. Features a hardwood pistol-grip handle. Quick-change wingnut and bolt hold the steel blades in place.
Net - Balance after deduction of tax.
Neutral Axis - Centroidal axis, transverse to longitudinal axis of a structural member, which is neither stretched nor shortened by bending of the member.
Neutral Wire - Usually colour-coded white, this carries electricity from an outlet back to the service panel. Also see Hot Wire and Ground.
New Build - The term for a newly built property.
New For Old - Applies to contents insurance and simply means they will replace your old good with equivalent new models in the event of a claim. Also relates to certain local planning permissions that generally allows replacement of an existing old building with a new one.
Newel - A post to which the end of a stair railing or balustrade is fastened. Also, any post to which a railing or balustrade is fastened
Newel Post - The large starting post to which the end of a stair guard railing or balustrade is fastened.
Newell - Either the central pillar of a spiral staircase or the two main supporting posts of a handrail found at the top and bottom of a staircase.
NHBC - A governing body for new homes who will issue a 10 year structural guarantee. Their inspectors will ensure that your new home is built properly and is safe.
NHBC Scheme - Building guarantee available on new houses and flats.
Niche - A recess in a wall to place various decorations.
Nightlatch Cylinder - A nightlatch that is operated by the rotation of a key in a cylinder.
Ninety Degree Corner Clamp - For accurate 90-degree joints, allows for gluing and nailing while the pieces are secure. Can be screwed to a bench top.
Nipple Bushed - A pipe threaded at both ends to connect two pipes of different dimensions.
Nitrate Cellulose - A binder made by chemical reaction of nitric acid on cellulose (cotton linters), also called Nitrocellulose or Pyroxylin.
Nitrocellulose - A binder made by chemical reaction of nitric acid on cellulose (cotton linters).
NM (Non Metallic) Cable - A type of Romex cable (nonmetallic sheathed cable that contains several conductors). The cable, which is flame-retardant, is limited to use in dry locations only and can not be exposed to excessive moisture.
NM (Non Metallic) Conduit - A type of Romex cable (nonmetallic sheathed cable that contains several conductors). NMC may be used in damp or corrosive locations as well as dry areas.
Nogging - Short horizontal timber fixed between two studs.
Noise Background - The sound level present in a room or space at any given time above which speech, music, desired signal, or sound must be raised in order to be heard or made intelligible
Nominal Dimension - - The named size; compare with Actual Size.
- An approximate rough cut dimension assigned to a piece of material as a convenience in referring to the piece, such as 2 by 4 or 500 pound.
- The stated size of a piece of lumber; its actual size is smaller.
- A dimension greater than a specified masonry unit dimension by the thickness of a mortar joint.
- This is the approximate facial size or thickness of tile, expressed in inches or fractions of an inch, for general reference, such as a "4 by 4" tile.
- Tubing measurement which has an inside diameter the same as iron pipe of the same stated size.
Nominal Size - The rough size of a member before planing. The ordinary commercial size by which timber or lumber is known and sold on the market, but it may differ from the actual size.
Nominal Span - The full width of a building measuring across the joists from one side to another or the measurement of columns from one centre to another.
Non Bearing Partition - A wall which separates space into rooms, but supports no vertical load except its own weight.
Non Bearing Wall - A wall supporting no load other than its own weight.
Non Curing Sealant - A sealant that does not set up or cure. See Butyl.
Non Drying Sealant - A sealant that does not set up or cure. See Butyl.

Non Mortgagable - A property for which you are unable to find a lender willing to give to a mortgage due to the results or a survey, the valuation to price or details of the lease or title deeds.
Non Profit Endowment - This type of endowment guarantees repayment of the loan. There are no annual or final bonuses and you generally have no chance of a cash surplus on maturity. Essentially, there is no benefit other than life cover which is equal to the value of the mortgage you have taken out. This is seen as an inefficient method of saving the money to pay back and is therefore rarely recommended as a method of repaying a mortgage.
Non Sag - A sealant formulation having a consistency that will permit application in vertical joints without appreciable sagging or slumping. A performance characteristic which allows the sealant to be installed in a sloped or vertical joint application without appreciable sagging or slumping.
Non Skinning - Descriptive of a product that does not form a surface skin.
Non Staining - Characteristic of a compound that will not stain a surface.
Non Status Mortgage - This is a mortgage mainly for people whose income is difficult to assess using the standard method adopted by most conventional mortgage lenders. Bonuses, commission and seasonal work can cause income to vary over time or be difficult to guarantee and this may not be considered acceptable in order to get a loan. The main groups of people that opt for self-certification mortgages are: Self-employed and unsalaried company directors, Contract workers (increasingly common in technology-based industries), Commission-based workers (often in sales, recruitment etc.), People with seasonal earnings. The interest rate you are charged will be higher to compensate the lender for the increased risk.
Nonbearing Wall - A wall supporting no load other than its own weight.
Nondisclosure - If you fail to disclose information to your insurer or provide false or incorrect information, this is termed nondisclosure and may nullify your policy.

Nonstructural - Not pertaining to the actual structure of a building and any materials or points that do not support any loads other than their own weight.
Nosing - The projecting edge of a moulding or drip or the front edge of a stair tread.
Notch - A crosswise groove at the end of a board.
Note - A formal document showing the existence of a debt and stating the terms of repayment.
Note Interest - In Scotland a solicitor notes your interest in a property which means that the seller will not accept any other offer without you having the opportunity to make one yourself.
Notice - An official request to vacate a property. A freeholder or landlord may serve you notice on your home for a variety of reasons, including failure to pay rent, breach of lease and in the case of rented property, simply because they want to sell the property.
Notice Actual - The giving of notice by mailing it or handing it to the recipient.
Notice To Quit - The legal notice to terminate a lease giving a specified date to quit the lease and/or property.
Noting An Interest - In Scotland you can note an interest in a property by contacting an owner or an estate agent. However to make a formal offer you must instruct solicitors to do that on your behalf. When you Note An Interest in a property then you are kept informed on any and all updates and changes relating to that property. By Noting An Interest you are not legally bound to buy the property or even to make an offer. Likewise, the seller is under no obligation to sell you the property or to accept your offer simply because you have Noted An Interest.
Nozzle - The part of a heating system that sprays the fuel of fuel-air mixture into the combustion chamber.
Nozzle Air - Perforated housing for atomizing air at head of spray gun; also called air nozzle.
Nuclear Meter - A device used to detect moisture by measuring slowed, deflected neutrons.
Number Symbols - One of the number symbols, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
Numbers Arabic - One of the number symbols, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
Numerals Arabic - One of the number symbols, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
NW Grade Brick - No Weather brick intended for use as a back-up or interior masonry.
